Lachlann awoke in the morning and saw Eben was curled around him. “Hi,” he whispered. “What are you doing here?”

“I remembered some things Lach,” Eben whispered back.

Lachlann stared at him and then yanked the other boy up and kissed him. Eben moaned, but pushed Lachlann back.

“I do remember you are a bad drinker. I bet you have such a headache.”

Lachlann winced as he remembered how much he had to drink. “Yeah, it’s pretty bad.”

Eben kissed his forehead. “I’ll get you some root medicine and water. That’s the best thing for you, you know?”

“I know.”

Eben watched Lachlann sleep. He thought about what the other boy had said.

He loves me, Eben thought. He sighed and turned to the window. I want to remember, but I can’t. Why can’t I?

Eben laid his head on the window sill. “This is ridiculous. There’s no reason not to remember. Think Eben, think,” he told himself. “You promised never to forget.” Eben sat up straight and looked at his reflection in the window. “I what?” He stared a little longer. Suddenly, flashes of his life came back to him.

Eben jumped for joy and threw himself at Lachlann.

Eben woke up confused as he heard pounding on his door. He slowly climbed out of bed and opened his door. He saw Lachlann on the other side, swaying.

“Eben,” the other boy slurred. “I love you. And-hic-I don’t think you’ll reme-hic-mber me, so I wanted to tell you before you fell in love with-hic-someone else.”

Eben blinked at Lachlann and watched as he swayed forward. Eben caught Lachlann before he hit the floor and dragged him to the bed. Eben took off his shoes and carefully arranged Lachlann. He sat in a chair by the window watching.

Lachlann stomped down the steps of the housing facility. Of course he wanted Eben to remember! He missed his lover curled around him at night, he missed talking with his best friend about anything, and he missed just having time together where they didn’t have anything to do. What the hell was Kane thinking? Lachlann just wanted to make sure Eben was safe, who knows what could happen if he was let outside again, especially now that he couldn’t remember his way around. Lachlann sighed and leaned against a wall. He knew Eben should remember his surroundings by going outside.

Kane sighed. Sometimes he forgot how childish Eben could be. “You’ll never remember anything if you stay locked up in here.”

“He can stay if he wants,” defend Lachlann from the doorway. He had heard the two arguing from the stairs.

“Lachlann,” Kane sighed exasperatedly.

“The doctor said it would come back in time and that he shouldn’t do any strenuous exercise.”

“Don’t you want him to remember?”

Lachlann scowled and turned from the room.

Lachlann quietly entered Eben’s room. The doctor had separated them for Eben’s health. Lachlann snorted. It was more like so he wouldn’t upset Eben. He quickly walked over to the window and placed the roses in a vase. Eben loved roses and Lachlann thought they might help him remember something. Lachlann turned to leave, when he heard a whimper and looked at Eben. The other boy was tossing and turning in his bed. Lachlann walked over and kissed Eben’s forehead.

“Rest now,” he whispered. Eben stopped twitching and sighed as he lay still. Lachlann smiled and left the room content.

Eben sat up with a gasp. He had been asleep and dreaming. He couldn’t remember much about the dream, but he knew he saw long brown hair.

The hair belonged to someone who was lying on his chest. Eben played with the hair and said, “You need to get it cut.”

“Maybe someday, but not today.”

Eben snorted. “Why do you have to be so stubborn?”

“I was born that way.”

Eben laughed.

The person turned their face up to look at Eben.

That was when he woke up. Now he desperately wanted to know who that face belonged too.

“I’m fine,” he insisted.

“Except that you don’t remember anything,” replied the doctor.

Lachlann had told Eben that there had been a training accident, and that Eben got knocked around by a stack of training weapons. Apparently, a few had smacked into his head and caused the amnesia. Lachlann had left to go tell their friends and family.

Eben was concerned about how standoffish Lachlann had become. When he first woke up, Lachlann was ready to help, but now he just stayed away. It made Eben’s chest hurt for no reason.

The smiled slipped off the boys face and was replaced with a look of shock.

“You’re Eben Porter and I’m Lachlann York. We’ve known each other since we were kids,” the other boy, Lachlann, said numbly.

“Oh. What happened?”
